New nurses uniforms coming from New Brunswick

WINDSOR, NS – Hants West MLA Chuck Porter says the NDP’s high taxes and the special interests they support are costing jobs at Nova Scotia companies.

The Nova Scotia Nurses Union voted last year to adopt a common uniform at a cost to taxpayers of about $500,000. In the past, nurses sourced and paid for their own uniforms.

The petition, “Calling upon the Minister of Health and Wellness to be more supportive to the concerns of the people of Hants West and establish a satellite dialysis unit at the Hants Community Hospital in Windsor as quickly as possible to alleviate some of the burden placed on dialysis patients in the area who currently have to travel great distances for treatment” was introduced and accepted by the House.

May 10, 2011, WINDSOR, NS – Hants West MLA Chuck Porter introduced a resolution in the Legislature today that called on the government to undertake a long overdue review of Nova Scotia’s school bus stop policy. “I have been asking for a review of this policy for the past five years and I was pleased to have Minister Bill Estabrooks support my resolution today,” said Porter. “It will hopefully be a first step in getting the review underway and making sure our children are as safe as possible as they travel to and from school.”

Currently, department policy dictates that there are to be no more than three stops within 1.6 kilometres. Porter says he has received numerous calls over the years about this issue and adds he is pleased that there will now be a review. “I have had conversations over the years with the school board and with Transportation Department officials about this policy and everyone appears open to looking into the policy,” said Porter. “Thousands of Nova Scotia’s young people travel to and from school on buses daily and we must make sure their safety is our priority.” Porter brought the resolution forward today after a passenger vehicle and a school bus were involved in an accident in Brooklyn.

NSP Rate Increases Gouging Pocketbooks

Dec 21, 2010, WINDSOR – Hants West MLA Chuck Porter is questioning the latest news from Nova Scotia Power that the utility may have to raise consumer rates if they are not given a break on taxes.  “Rate increases, along with the threat of future rate increases, from Nova Scotia Power seem to be never ending,” said Porter. “On January 1, 2011, Nova Scotians will see their power bills increase 5.66 per cent and yet Nova Scotia Power still wants more from consumers. In a year of record breaking profits, are we going to see the infrastructure investments that are needed to keep the power flowing?”

Nova Scotia Power has recently requested that tax savings from three wind farm developments be deferred to 2011 from 2010. The utility cautioned that if this does not occur, Nova Scotians may see higher power rates. “The increases have to stop. The government has to stand up and take leadership on this issue or it will only be a matter of time before Nova Scotia Power will be increasing rates again,” said Porter. “Nova Scotia Power is buying foreign coal, their parent company, Emera, is buying foreign companies, and Nova Scotians are paying more and more for the power to heat our homes.”

Porter suggests that Nova Scotia Power should start looking into utilizing more local alternatives, like coal from the proposed Donkin mine in Cape Breton, to help stabilize power rates for consumers and put money back in the pockets of families.

“Having frequently rising rates hurts families earning low incomes, and seniors on fixed incomes,” said Porter. “I am encouraging the government to immediately start working with Nova Scotia Power to reduce the strain of increasing rates on Nova Scotians.”

Nov 17 2010, WINDSOR – Hants West MLA Chuck Porter has successfully secured more than $40,000 for roof repairs on the Industrial Building at the Hants County Exhibition site.  “ I spoke to Economic and Rural Development Minister Percy Paris and explained how this funding was necessary to repair the roof on the Industrial Building,” said Porter. “I welcomed the news that the Minister listened to my concerns and the community will receive the funds to fix the building.”

The one-time contribution of $41,255 will go to the Windsor Agricultural Society to administer. “The Industrial Building is home to the annual Pumpkin Weigh-off and countless displays and booths during the Exhibition. It has become part of our community traditions and this funding and the repairs it will facilitate mean a lot to Hants County,” said Porter.
